The Show

Every family has a story it hasn't fully told.

Family Tree is a father-and-child podcast built around one belief: the stories families carry — and the ones they keep quiet — shape who we become far more than we realise.

Each episode features a family member telling their story, followed by an expert — a family psychologist, genealogist, or therapist — who helps us understand what we just heard.

This isn't a genealogy show. It's an archaeology of the people who made you.

Ep 01 — Pilot

Why We Started This

The origin episode. A father shares one story he's never told on record, and we explain why this project matters.

Family: Dad — the origin episode

Expert: Family psychologist

Ep 02

Where We Came From

An oldest relative traces the geography, migration, and life before. A genealogist gives the historical context that shapes the story.

Family: Grandparent / oldest relative

Expert: Genealogist / family historian

Ep 03

The Decision That Changed Everything

One choice — a move, a marriage, a door left unopened — and how it redirected everything that came after.

Family: Parent, aunt, or uncle

Expert: Family therapist

Ep 04

What Was Never Spoken About

Every family has a silence. This episode asks what it is, why it exists, and what it costs when it finally gets named.

Family: Dad + one other relative

Expert: Psychologist — family secrecy

Ep 05

Work, Hands, and What We Built

The trades, the labor, the identity wrapped in how a family makes its living across generations.

Family: Relative known for their work

Expert: Sociologist / occupational psychologist

Ep 06

The One Who Left

Every family has someone who broke from the pattern. What were they running toward — and what did leaving do to those who stayed?

Family: The relative who left

Expert: Family systems therapist

Ep 07

Love Stories (The Real Ones)

Not the polished version. How did they actually meet? What nearly ended it? What kept it together?

Family: A couple, or parent on their relationship

Expert: Relationship psychologist

Ep 08

Hardship and How We Got Through It

A family member recounts the hardest period they lived through. A trauma psychologist explores what survival looks like across generations.

Family: Relative who survived hardship

Expert: Trauma psychologist

"The stories families carry — and the ones they keep quiet — shape who we become far more than we realise."

The Format

How Every Episode Works

01

A Family Member Tells Their Story

Every episode opens with an intimate recorded conversation between host and a family member. No scripts — just questions, memory, and the unexpected turns that make real stories so powerful.

02

An Expert Illuminates It

A family psychologist, genealogist, or therapist joins to give the story context. Not to analyse — to help listeners understand what they just heard, and what it might mean for their own family.

03

One Anchor Question

Every episode ends with the same question: "What do you want the next generation to know about where we came from?" A recurring thread that ties the whole season together.

04

Your Family, Reflected Back

Every episode is designed to make you think of your own family — and maybe pick up the phone. The best listener response isn't a review. It's a conversation you start with someone you love.

Behind the Mic

The Hosts

The Dad

Co-Host & First Guest

The person whose stories started this project. Every conversation reveals something new — not just about the family, but about how memory works, what we protect, and what we finally decide to say out loud.

The Daughter

Host & Creator

The idea behind Family Tree started with a simple realisation: the people who shaped me most had stories I'd never fully heard. This podcast is my attempt to change that — one conversation at a time, before the chance is gone.
